_Fisher, Doug & Nancy Frey. Better Learning through Structured Teaching: A Framework for the Gradual Release of Responsibility. 2008. Alexandria, VA: ASCD, 4.
| _The gradual release of responsibility model is an instructional
framework that consists of four components. These components can be
used in any order. Within these components, incorporate instructional practices and literacy support tools and strategies
to engage students with content in ways that mirror what content area
experts do to inquire and gain understanding in their disciplines.
Focus Lesson: The focus lesson establishes the purpose of the lesson and allows for the teacher to model his or her thinking. Refer to BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE, THINK ALOUD, READ ALOUD OR SHARED READING, and INTERACTIVE READING for more information. Guided Instruction: Guided instruction allows for the teacher to question, prompt, and cue students to facilitate thinking about the topic. Refer to QUESTION, PROMPT AND CUE, CHECK-IN CONFERENCES, and FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS for more information. Collaborative Learning: Collaborative learning creates an opportunity in which students work together, using academic language, to complete a task. Refer to PRODUCTIVE GROUP WORK, CHECK-IN CONFERENCES, and FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS. Independent Learning: Independent learning is where students apply what they have learned. Refer to DEVELOP VOCABULARY, ASK QUESTIONS, READ A TEXT, TAKE NOTES, SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION, RUBRICS AND CHECKLISTS, and ONE-ON-ONE/SMALL GROUP CONFERENCES. |
